BRRRRrrrrrr


Cruise, anyone? 
We have been experiencing an exceptionally cold winter this year, and last Monday was a record snowfall day for South Korea.  So, when we came across these masks in the Christmas box -Yes - the Christmas box - found while storing away Christmas decor until next year - don't really know WHY they are in that box - perhaps left over from some New Year's Eve celebration or something...but anyway...when we found the masks they put us in mind of something warmer, like sailing in the Caribbean or something.  So we put them on and immediately felt warmer, perhaps because they made us laugh A LOT.  Go ahead - laugh right along with us!



So, here are pictures of the snowfall,  Very pink pictures.  The snow was not really pink - it was the usual white.  But, something is wrong with Sarah's camera and lately many pictures are pink.  She is sad about this, as it likely means she will need a new camera soon.  It should be no surprise since this one is a 10-year old model, but she likes it.  One of her frustrations in life is having technology become obsolete.  However, pink aside, you can see that we did get quite a bit of snow.


Street below our apartment.  Notice the woman with the umbrella.  Umbrellas are used here for rain, sun, and also for snow.



The pedestrian ramp at the sports stadium makes a great sledding hill. In addition to kids on sleds, saucers, and other snow stuff, the boys here take pieces of cardboard or vinyl flooring and use them as makeshift snowboards.  It leads to some interesting moves.  At the top of the ramp are some kids just starting out.  In the middle of the ramp is a cluster of boys recovering from a spectacular crash.  It is fun to sit by the window, cup of cocoa in hand, and watch the snow and the city.  It looks different from up here, sort of like being in a snow globe.

And now a personal note from Sarah...

Holiday mail here has been a little slow this year.  Christmas cards are still trickling in.  The Christmas DVD's we ordered arrived on Thursday. And, another wonderful surprise arrived this week as well. 

On the December 13 post Layden posted this watercolor picture that I had done.  My thoughtful and clever daughter-in-law had note cards made featuring this picture.  What a wonderful Christmas present - one of my best ever!  Thanks Bethany!!

Remember this sign?
We have learned something really interesting about this "welcome sign" which we thought was a big billboard that was pasted onto an old overpass. It turns out that this is a defensive emplacement known as a rock drop. It is a big concrete box full of rubble and rocks. In the event of an invasion by North Korea the panels underneath the drop will be opened and release the rubble across the roadway, hampering movement into South Korea.

On Wednesday July 22 Asia experienced a solar eclipse and we got to see it! Miraculously the expected day of monsoon rain did not materialize and the sky was mostly clear for the duration. During the eclipse, which occured around 11:00 a.m., the sun was much too bright to view directly - we had to be satisfied with reflected images. But, as the sun began to re-appear, just enough clouds came in to allow us to look - and take a picture. It was quite something to behold and we feel lucky for the opportunity.

We had 2 days of church meetings in the Seoul area. Today the weather was remarkably clear and I was able to get a great view of the city skyline and the radio tower. Usually the sky is too hazy for a view like this. Pollution, rain, high humidity or dust storms are contributing factors.
