More Road-Related Humor

We love living in yet another place with evocative highway signs - imagine - Pearl Harbor!  Much harder to imagine is this part of the sign...
...Interstate.  Really?  To which state might this road actually connect?

In case you can't read this blinking warning sign, it says, "BEWARE OF POTHOLES" and the reason you might not be able to read it so well is that potholes, though you my know they are present, are really not that easy to avoid!  Apparently large potholes show up during heavy rains, which we have had a lot of this last week.  They really are a menace, and are not at all appreciated, especially by those of us with recently acquired vehicles.

Here is Layden with our new addition to our auto family.  Living "out in the country" is lovely, but we decided that it really would be easier if we had two cars.  We learned several things in the process of aquiring said car.  First, one no longer buys a "used car."  One purchases a "pre-owned vechicle," in our case this nice Jetta.  Second, cars in Hawaii, pre-owned or not, are, like everything else here, more expensive than they would be elsewhere. Third, if you buy a car according to the method endorsed by  Dave Ramsey here, you are a lot more cautious about handing over your money for the first car that catches your eye and a lot more willing to look for a really good deal.  Fourth, we really don't like to buy cars!

Having cars means maintenance - in this case, our PT Cruiser needed an A/C recharge for the first time in almost 7 years.  So I took it in to the local auto shop.  This is my waiting room.  Only in Hawaii...

Cars and roads are not the only transportation methods used in the Islands.  But sometimes it is necessary to transport your transportation.  Such a BIG inflatable turtle on this little car!

  1. I think the same person who was responsible for the mapquest directions made this Interstate sign! Do you ever feel claustrophobic in Hawaii or do you like the feeling of being isolated?

Remember this sign?
We have learned something really interesting about this "welcome sign" which we thought was a big billboard that was pasted onto an old overpass. It turns out that this is a defensive emplacement known as a rock drop. It is a big concrete box full of rubble and rocks. In the event of an invasion by North Korea the panels underneath the drop will be opened and release the rubble across the roadway, hampering movement into South Korea.

SOLAR ECLIPSE!

SOLAR ECLIPSE!
Might look like the moon - but it's the sun!
On Wednesday July 22 Asia experienced a solar eclipse and we got to see it! Miraculously the expected day of monsoon rain did not materialize and the sky was mostly clear for the duration. During the eclipse, which occured around 11:00 a.m., the sun was much too bright to view directly - we had to be satisfied with reflected images. But, as the sun began to re-appear, just enough clouds came in to allow us to look - and take a picture. It was quite something to behold and we feel lucky for the opportunity.

On A Clear Day...

On A Clear Day...
We had 2 days of church meetings in the Seoul area. Today the weather was remarkably clear and I was able to get a great view of the city skyline and the radio tower. Usually the sky is too hazy for a view like this. Pollution, rain, high humidity or dust storms are contributing factors.
